The new Mercedes-Benz C-class range not only looks a whole lot better, it introduces a host of new features and technical innovations. Mercedes-Benz says that the changes are aimed particularly at improving safety, comfort and driving pleasure, and also to provide the cars with a more dynamic appeal that will complement their fresher and more youthful appearance. Initially, there are four versions of these new C-class sedans available, and the choice of three equipment levels: Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde. The entry model is the C180 Classic, which is powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine that produces 85 Kw of power and 185 Nm of torque. With five-speed automatic, the C180 Classic is priced at $54,900. A six-speed manual version is available for $51,800. Next is the C200 KOMPRESSOR Classic which, with the help of its belt-driven supercharger, puts out 120 kW and 230 Nm. The automatic C200K costs $62,900 and the manual, $59,800. The C240 (tested) is powered by a 2.6 litre V6 engine, which produces 125 kW and 240 Nm. It’s available with automatic transmission only and costs $72,900 in the Classic equipment level. The auto-only C320 flagship model (also tested) has a 3.2 litre V6 engine with 160 kW and 310 Nm on tap. The price is $99,900 for both Elegance and Avantgarde models (there’s no Classic C320). The Elegance package adds $6,000 and the Avantgarde, $5,500, to the base price of the other models. The new C-class range also comes in wagon form; the models being the C200K and C240. The C200K wagon comes in Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde levels; the C240 comes in Classic, Elegance and Sport versions. All the wagons come with automatic transmission only. C-class wagon prices start at $62,080 (the 200K Classic) and run through to a top of $85,080 (the 240 Sport)
