Port Elgin

Originally called “Normanton”, Port Elgin is a lovely, close knit community in Bruce County, Ontario. In 1998, it was amalgamated into a single municipality with Saugeen Township and the town of Southampton. Port Elgin is a four seasons community which is filled with events and all sorts of activities all year round.

With a permanent population of 6,880 individuals at present, the town is quite different from a typical beach town. The first settlers came into the area around 1849 and business and progress have been booming ever since. With agriculture and shipping industry prospering in the area, it is easy to see why so many people make their way into the area, regardless of its small size.

Places to See in Port Elgin

With tourism becoming quite an important commodity in the area since 1990, targeted development was carried out in the area to improve tourism.  The town was beautified and more cottages were built to accommodate the increasing number of people coming into the town.  Here are a few things on offer:

MacGregor Point Provincial Park

Featuring a seven-kilometre-long stretch of forests, beaches, coastal wetlands and dunes, MacGregor Point Provincial Park is one of the most frequented parks in the area. The park is an all-season destination for camping, hiking, swimming, wildlife and bird watching. Have you ever been in a yurt?  In winter, visitors can camp in yurts, cross-country ski, hike, or go skating.

Saugeeen Rail Trail

The Saugeen Rail Trail is a year-round trail connecting Southampton and Port Elgin along the abandoned CN rail line. A popular trip is to travel the entire trail by bike from Port Elgin to Southampton and loop back along the scenic North Shore Road where beautiful views of Lake Huron can be experienced.

The Wismer House and Lord Elgin Fish and Chips

If you want to enjoy some good food with good company and have an incredible time, why not stop at one or both of these local landmarks?

Events Around the City of Port Elgin:

But, if you are looking for events that are unique to Port Elgin, then you will certainly be surprised by all that the town has to offer.
