Wiaton is a small town in Bruce County, Ontario and a part of the municipality of South Bruce Peninsula. It was built on lands acquired from the First Nations and named after the birthplace of the then Governor General of Canada and turned into a town from a village in 1880.
The town of Wiarton has an extensive and quite interesting historical timeline. This makes it a go-to place for history connoisseurs passing through town. Apart from that, here are some things you can do in Wiarton:
The Bruce Trail is one of the most famous trails in the area, running along the Niagara Escarpment. It passes through Wiarton and gives hikers on the trails a gorgeous view of Georgian Bay.
The Bruce Caves Conservation Area found alongside the Niagara Escarpment is quite famous with tourists and locals alike and is a must-see location for anyone just passing through town. Did you know that these caves were formed by the wave action of post glacial Lake Algonquin almost 8 millennia ago?
Located on Georgian Bay, Colpoys Bay is a relatively calm area that sees various fish derbies annually, and trout and large salmon can be fished from its waters. This bay is quite well-known among fishing enthusiasts in the area and frequented by visitors just passing by.
From caves to trails to fishing bays and other engaging attractions, Wiarton is also well known for the ski clubs found in the area. Cross country ski enthusiasts have the choice of Sauble Beach Ski Club or Bruce Ski Club, both of which offer 3 groomed trails for all levels of skiers.
These areas include the Spirit Rock Conservation Area , which features the Corran Ruins, which were once a late 1800’s mansion. Or how about Bluewater Park , which is quite famous for Wiarton Willie and is known as the hidden gem of the shores of Colpoys. Then there is the area known as Rural Rootz. If you are into hiking, rock climbing or exploring natural rock formations, then this place is for you! The Mountain Bike Adventure Park, as the name suggests, is a park where you can take your mountain bike out for a ride in the scenic views of Wiarton and the surrounding area. The town of Wiarton offers a unique blend of history, scenic vistas and adventure!
